I have included sound files for each flute. These were recorded on my laptop computer sitting in my lounge room. There is no studio, no reverb, no signal cleaning, no effects, no enhancements — just the raw basic sound so that you can do an honest appraisal.
Mackay Cedar body · Pacific Ebony block
The body is made from Mackay Cedar, a rare timber found only in a small area near Mackay, Queensland. A mid-weight timber at about 660kg per cubic metre, with very fine grain and a distinct vinegar-like smell when first cut — a beautiful red-brown timber with ribbons of light beige running through it, reminiscent of a caramel milkshake with ice cream. This piece has subtle figuring the camera doesn't quite capture. As a flute timber, Mackay Cedar has a warm but clear voice — one of the maker's personal favourites acoustically.
The block is Pacific Ebony, a very hard, very dense timber from Fiji that is rarely available — almost black, hence the name.
Finished with purple leather straps, making this flute stand out from the crowd.
